Description
What we have here is a celestial map that d
epicts the “imagined whirlpools of Descartes with two comets.” The map was made by Nicolas Bion in 1744 and is hand painted.
The words on the bottom of the page translate to: “Figure of celestial whirlpools to be put between the pages. A. Comet which turns incessantly on its orb. A.B.C.D.E. Another comet which also rotates without ceasing on its orb E.F.G.H”
The map (including margins) measures about
21 1/2 (cm) x 25 1/2 (cm).
Bion was King
Louis XIV’s engineer and was very respected.
